Nick Ruest (York University) posted a blog, “ManoWhisper Visualizations,” detailing his work on ManoWhisper in partnership with University of Waterloo for the Digital Feminist Network. ManoWhisper is a compilation of “an ever-growing dataset of podcast transcripts comprising over 11,000 episodes from 20 podcasts associated with the Intellectual Dark Web, conspiracy theories, QAnon, the Alt-Right, White Supremacist/Nationalist movements, and the Manosphere.”
Ruest’s blog goes on to describe how data visualizations can be a good way to discover patterns in data that researchers may not want to close reads of “over 11,000 transcripts of material from these communities. It can get real traumatic real quick.” The blog details example results from using seven visualization tools: Red Pill Caliper, Red Pill Resonator, Emotional Rollercoaster, Wave of Misogyny, Dicks Hate the Police, Donut Hate Women, and Donut Hate.
