RESOURCE: University Libraries using Virtual Reality Technology to Preserve the Past

Michelle Rebaleati (University of Nevada, Reno University Libraries Multimedia Specialist) delivered a TedX talk on the use of virtual reality and digital archives for preserving the past at the recent TEDxUniversityofNevada.

Her talk, “How virtual reality can help us preserve the past,” covered several digital projects, including:

  • The Reno Street Art Project, “a multimedia time capsule highlighting street art on display in Reno between July 2017 and December 2017.”
  • Walking With Reality, a documentary film featuring a 48-year-old University of Nevada, Reno student who suffers from Cerebral Palsy.
  • The Virtual Reality Museum, an in-progress project being created in partnership with the Department of Anthropology to create 3D recreations of the department’s Indigenous baskets collection.
