Thomas Padilla (Michigan State University Libraries) has written a post on visualizing two-dimensional images in three-dimensional space using cover images from the IF Magazine archive as a dataset. The tutorial walks users through gathering a dataset of images, preparing them for visualization, and using ImageJ to explore the images in three-dimensional space. Padilla details the various tools and commands necessary to recreate his example with the IF covers in a manner that is adaptable to other image sources and points to the work of Peter Leonard and Lindsay King, Lev Manovich, and Ryan Baumann for examples of other applications for large-scale image visualizations.
