The Scholarsā Lab at the University of Virginia Library has released a call for proposals for “creative works that tell evocative, artistic, and thought-provoking stories with data” to be displayed in the Scholars’ Lab community space. From the call:
We use ādata artā rather than ādata visualizationā to emphasize we seek physical, compelling, data-inspired or data-enriched compositions that inspire or educate visitors. These can be, butĀ do not needĀ to be large-scale research projects. TheyĀ should beĀ based on some kind of specific data, but we define data broadly to include analog, ephemeral ādataā such as photo albums, archives, and personal records, as well as digital datasets. Projects should take a material formāthat visitors to our space can examine and/or interact with. They can be graphical (2D) or multidimensional exhibits, and can also incorporate sound or other analog or digital media.
Proposals must include a title, artist bio, an artistic plan for the work including description and link to any websites, images, or video of the work if it already exists, and a project explanation (one page or less). Submissions should be sent to Laura Miller (lam2c[at]virginia[dot]edu) by end of day on May 16, 2025. The artist(s) of the accepted piece will also receive a $1000 award.
