Transitions of Leadership: Succession, Stewardship, and Sustainability in the Digital Humanities (online conference, 16 November, 2026)

Many larger digital humanities initiatives now span multiple generations of scholars, infrastructures, and institutions. As these projects, platforms, and partnerships mature and continue over time, questions of leadership and succession have become increasingly central to their future—and, by extension in some cases, to the future of the field. Even so, while many project founders and leaders have devoted considerable time, energy, and intellectual engagement ensuring that their initiatives survive technological shifts and endure as key scholarly infrastructures, often less attention is devoted to facilitating successful transition and succession of their own leadership roles, and those of others who are central to these initiatives, as they retire, change institutions, pursue new research projects, or step back for other reasons. Further, at present there is very little available in our field’s professional literature offering guidance about this; much of what exists is via occasional, and often sad, anecdotes of situations in which succession has gone wrong or occurred unexpectedly.

Through a series of pre-recorded videos and two discussion sessions, this conference considers transitions of leadership in this context, exploring success stories in which those involved in ongoing digital humanities initiatives have navigated leadership transition effectively. Questions to be explored include:

What lessons can be learned from the lived experience of digital humanities researchers, librarians, innovators and others who have managed a project transition from their leadership to someone else?

What are the challenges associated with transition and succession?

What are some best practices to make these transitions successful?

Panel speakers and their videos can be found at: https://hsscommons.ca/en/groups/dhtransitions/collections/panel-talks. (You will need to be a member of this group to view the videos.)

Schedule:

The book traces how data visualization has been used both to consolidate knowledge and power and to expose oppression and bring about change. Its examples include a diagram of captives in the hold of a slave ship made by British antislavery activists, and a map a Ñudzahui (Mixtec) painter created to document his people’s claims to their land. The book also includes new visualizations by Klein and her research team, which can be explored on an accompanying interactive website.

Klein, Professor of Data & Decision Sciences and English at Emory University and director of its Digital Humanities Lab, will be joined by contributors Margy Adams, Shiyao Li, Tanvi Sharma, and Jay Varner of the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship. Catherine D’Ignazio, Klein’s co-author on Data Feminism and director of MIT’s Data + Feminism Lab, will moderate. The event is free, with registration required for virtual attendance.

The symposium is guided by the theme “Transfronteras: Third Spaces in Digital Humanities,” which invites participants to reflect on and discuss digital humanities as terceros espacios / third spaces. From the virtual program:

Border feminist scholar Gloria Anzaldúa (1987) describes the borderlands as a liminal and hybrid space produced through the meeting of different cultures and identities—an in-between zone where new meanings emerge, where those
living at the margins can find belonging, and where dominant narratives can be challenged and transformed. Similarly, her concept of nepantla, understood as a “lugar de en medio,” names a state of transition and ambiguity experienced at geographic, cultural, and identity borders. Rooted in a Náhuatl term, Anzaldúa reinterprets nepantla as a transformative liminal space crucial to the formation of new identities.

Understanding digital humanities as a third space—as nepantla—allows us to recognize a wide range of collaborative efforts across disciplines, cultures, skills and knowledges, languages, communities, and geographies. These efforts have created counter-spaces and alternative models: communities, teams, projects, and ideas within and beyond academia that respond to contest, and challenge dominant narratives. Attentive to local, transborder, transnational, and personal borders, we welcome reflections on work shaped by adversity, mistakes, failures, violence, rupture, and change, and on how such moments become sites for navigating borders through inquiry, creativity, transgression, and transformation.

We embrace the slow, the incomplete, and the pause as productive practices that connect, nourish, and cultivate workflows integrating the humanities and the digital in pursuit of more just and livable worlds. This year’s theme encourages contributors to share lessons learned about transborder digital humanities as commitment, as impact, and as ongoing collaboration with individuals, communities, and teams across borders in times of continual evolution.

An early-career Data Visualization Librarian will begin the program by presenting their experiences joining a new position for a university library’s Digital Scholarship Lab. They will share their strategies of surveying needs with subject liaisons and building relationships with other educational units on campus to inform their priorities in developing data visualization resources and services. To expand beyond individual actions to improve services, an established Data Services Librarian within the same unit will describe his efforts re-establishing a Research Facilitation Network, which highlights and connects the research support services provided throughout the university. In re-establishing this Network, the team adapted the Campus Research Computing Consortium’s Capabilities Model to assess the research computing and data landscape at the university. In addition to building a sense of community among researchers and service providers, the Network provides regular events that address gaps in research support on campus. The unit lead will provide context for the intersection of data services and digital scholarship within academic libraries, using the Big Ten Academic Alliance libraries as a subset model. He will also illustrate how he has used appreciative inquiry to facilitate unit-level strategic planning as an active and ongoing conversation with team members, affiliate faculty, and constituents. In his presentation around strategic planning, he will share approaches for advocating for new positions, refining existing positions to meet emergent needs, and planning within the context of budget reductions.

The presentation will take place April 22, 2026, starting at 1:00 PM Central Time. Registration can be found here.
