The purpose of this study is to gain information relating to how the growing use of generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, is reshaping user practices and expectations in relation to searching, discovering, and interpreting digitised and born-digital archival records. The study aims to explore how users engage with archival materials, how issues such as provenance, context, transparency, and trust are understood in AI-mediated environments, and what opportunities and challenges users perceive in AI-supported archival access.

This study is part of a research project supported by Loughborough University. The study is undertaken by Dr Lingjia Zhao and Dr Matthew Kidd, and led by Professor Lise Jaillant (Responsible Investigator).

will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey, which should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. You do not need to do anything before completing the survey. This is a low risk activity and no disadvantages or risks have been identified in association with participating.

You must be over the age of 18 and have the capacity to fully understand and consent to this research. You should also have experience working with digitised and/or born-digital data in a research or professional capacity. This may include, but is not limited to, students and researchers in higher education, archivists and other professionals working in galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM), journalists, and professionals working with public-sector or government records.

Digital humanities library workers could bring unique perspectives to this study, particularly those who work at the intersection of digital archival collections and emerging technologies.

The Mapping the Black Digital and Public Humanities database is a project created at James Madison University consisting of maps, visualizations, and a searchable database of black digital and public humanities projects. Stemming out of work on their project, Celebrating Simms, and inspired by the Colored Convention Project’s Black Digital Humanities Projects and Resources Google Doc and the Reviews in Digital Humanities journal’s project registry, Mapping BDPH is a partnership between JMU Libraries and graduate students to track, map, and visualize a broad range of Black digital and public humanities projects. The resulting beta project “is meant to be as much an invitation for others to participate in the ongoing development of this project to map the Black digital and public humanities as it is an early demonstration of what we hope this work can achieve.”

From the survey instrument:

If you HAVE ATTENDED, TAUGHT, and/or ORGANIZED digital humanities/digital skills workshops, in person or online, between the years 2019-2023, we want to hear from you! We’ll ask you to provide feedback about your experiences, including benefits and/or challenges, and your opinions on these workshops, as well as your thoughts on future workshops.

If you have NOT ATTENDED, TAUGHT, or ORGANIZED workshops between 2019-2023 (or ever!), we still want to hear from you! We will ask you to provide feedback about factors that may have impacted your decisions not to participate in the past and about your thoughts on future workshops.

If you work in a library and have any experience with text encoding projects, from web development to project management, please consider participating in a new survey, available here.

Completing the survey should take no more than 30 minutes, and will help academic libraries develop strategic initiatives based on current practice.

From the announcement:

Following on papers, presentations and discussions that resulted from the theme of the 2009 Conference and Members’ Meeting of the TEI Consortium, “Text Encoding in the Era of Mass Digitization,” the launch of the AccessTEI program in 2010, and the recent release of the “Best Practices for TEI in Libraries” in 2011, it behooves us—stewards of text encoding initiatives in academic libraries—to better understand if and how text encoding practices have changed as a result of mass digitization by Google, declining budgets, and an increased emphasis on streamlined digital library services in support of speedier and more voluminous online content production and publishing.

The study is being conducted by Michelle Dalmau, Digital Projects and Usability Librarian for the Indiana University Digital Library Program, and <a title="Kevin S.
