CTDH will provide individuals across New England who are interested in digital humanities with an opportunity to learn new techniques and skills, hear about their colleagues’ DH projects, and become part of a vibrant and diverse community of scholars and practitioners.” The 2027 conference will be held March 18-19 at the Elihu Burritt Library at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT. From the call for proposals:

The fifth Connecticut Digital Humanities Conference (CTDH) will take place on March 19-20, 2027 at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. We seek participation from a broad range of digital humanities practitioners, including participants from higher education, community and cultural organizations, K-12 education, state and local government, and the general public.

CTDH endeavors to bring together a network of DH practitioners committed to advancing collaborative work in digital humanities research and pedagogy across the New England region. CTDH provides individuals with an opportunity to learn new techniques and skills, hear about their colleagues’ DH projects, and become part of a vibrant and diverse community of teachers, learners, and practitioners. CTDH is an excellent opportunity for getting feedback, developing skills, or sharing your work with other colleagues from across New England. While we encourage projects with a Connecticut focus, the conference is not limited to Connecticut-based projects or practitioners. We especially welcome proposals that address digital humanities in diverse contexts, including museums, libraries, and archives; community organizing and activism; and public education.

We invite contributions from faculty researchers, unaffiliated scholars, librarians, museum professionals, technologists, undergraduate and graduate students, K-12 teachers, and community groups. We encourage those submitting proposals to consider formats beyond the traditional 20-minute paper, such as roundtables, multi-speaker panels, lightning talks, posters, and digital demonstrations. Proposals should be less than 300 words in length and should describe the proposed topic, session format, and names and affiliations of participants.

Proposals are due January 22, 2027. Proposals may be submitted via this Google Form. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by early February. More information can be found on the CTDH website. If you have questions, please contact Brian Matzke at bmatzke@ccsu.edu.

Alexander, PhD. From their 2027 call for proposals:

In both personal and professional settings, responsibilities are ever-increasing for scholars working at the intersections of academic practice, data archives, and museum collections. At their foundational core, the technologies developed to aid us are meant to consolidate workflows, streamline communication, and facilitate new skills and approaches. Technological convenience, however, can come with inherent challenges that may not be immediately apparent to the user. What happens when new systems needlessly complicate divisions of labor, impede collaboration, or limit creative expression? How can humanists better support, advocate, and mediate digital knowledges for the broader field of American art and visual culture?

Themes/projects can include:

Machine learning and AI: As machine learning tools are increasingly used for image recognition, metadata generation, provenance research, or audience analytics, what new
forms of labor, oversight, or ethical scrutiny do these tools demand of art historians and museum professionals—and who bears responsibility when the technology gets it wrong?

Pedagogy and digital literacy: How are art history and museum studies curricula adapting to prepare students for a field increasingly mediated by digital tools and AI systems, and what tensions arise between teaching traditional connoisseurship or archival methods and training students in data literacy or computational approaches?

Collections management systems: How do collections management systems (e.g., TMS, PastPerfect, EMu) shape—or constrain—the way registrars, curators, and archivists
describe, categorize, and narrate objects, and what happens when institutional data standards conflict with an object’s cultural or historical complexity?

Digital exhibitions and catalogues raisonnés: In what ways do digital and virtual exhibition platforms or digital catalogues raisonnés expand access to collections, and in what ways might they inadvertently flatten the interpretive nuance, spatial context, or embodied experience that in-person encounters with art provide?

Labor and institutional hierarchy: How do decisions about adopting new technologies get made within museums and academic departments, and how might the burden of learning, implementing, or troubleshooting these systems fall unevenly across curatorial, registrarial, IT, and administrative staff?

Access and equity: Who is included—and who is left out—when museums and archives prioritize digital-first strategies, whether in terms of staff technical capacity, institutional funding, audience access, or the digitization priorities placed on certain collections over others?

Creative and interpretive labor: In what ways might algorithmically driven tools (recommendation engines, automated tagging, generative AI for interpretive text) influence
or constrain the interpretive voice and creative authority of curators, educators, and scholars?

Deadline for expressions of interest: January 15, 2027
Please submit a proposed title, brief topic description, and anticipated format (see below) by email to keidra.navaroli@ucf.edu and kaylee.alexander@utah.edu. Applicants will be notified by January 22, 2027. Those invited to contribute will be asked to submit a draft by March 1, 2027.

Submission formats include:

Essays & Critical Reviews (1,500–2,000 words): In-depth analyses of emerging technologies, computational methodologies, or born-digital initiatives in the field of American art and art history.

Field Notes (500–1,000 words): Responses to technological developments, digital ethics, pedagogical experiments, academic labor, or shifts in contemporary artistic practice or art historical methods.

The proposed book includes a dedicated chapter on digital scholarship and emerging technologies, and several of the other sections are likewise directly relevant to the work of digital humanities/scholarship library folks:

Book Summary

Content Overview
Humanities at the Center: Reimagining Arts and Humanities Librarianship in the Contemporary Academic Library is an edited volume exploring how academic libraries are reimagining arts and humanities librarianship in response to major transformations in higher education, scholarly communication, technology, and institutional priorities.

Academic libraries are increasingly operating within institutional environments characterized by budgetary pressures, technological transformation, declining humanities enrollments, workforce restructuring, and heightened expectations for measurable institutional impact. Within these contexts, arts and humanities librarianship is frequently required to demonstrate its relevance while simultaneously adapting to changing modes of scholarship, teaching, and research support. Arts and humanities librarians continue to play critical roles in critical information literacy; teaching and learning; cultural stewardship; student and community engagement; and interdisciplinary collaboration.

While there is substantial literature on digital humanities, liaison librarianship, scholarly communication, and critical librarianship, there is currently no comprehensive volume examining the future of arts and humanities librarianship through integrated administrative, pedagogical, technological, cultural, and organizational perspectives. This volume will fill that gap by providing:

Practical strategies for supporting arts and humanities teaching and research;

Sustainable approaches to arts and humanities initiatives;

Models for campus and community collaboration;

Frameworks for equitable collections and archival work; and

Adaptable leadership and staffing approaches.

The volume will combine scholarly analysis, practical case studies, and transferable implementation strategies. Contributors will emphasize actionable recommendations, scalable models, assessment approaches, lessons learned, and adaptable practices applicable across institution types.

Designed for academic librarians developing or reimagining humanities services, as well as library administrators seeking sustainable support models, this volume will be especially valuable to information professionals working in the arts and humanities in higher education, digital humanities practitioners, archives and special collections professionals, library administrators, and Library and Information Science faculty and graduate students.

Proposed Sections
The volume will include five sections, in addition to the editor’s introduction and conclusion on the landscape of leadership and organizational change in academic libraries.

Collections and Archives: This section will focus on creative and community-informed approaches to collection development, special collections, archival, and cultural heritage stewardship, including efforts to address historical gaps and cultural biases.

Critical, Creative, and Inclusive Pedagogies: Contributions may address humanities-based teaching practices, information and visual literacy instruction, as well as student engagement strategies grounded in critical, inclusive, and equity-centered frameworks.
Liaison and Subject Librarianship: This area will consider evolving models of liaison work, including interdisciplinary collaboration, faculty partnerships, and shifting expectations for subject specialists in academic libraries. It will also examine the role of arts and humanities librarianship in fostering and sustaining these partnerships.

Digital Scholarship and Emerging Technologies: This section will explore the intersections of arts and humanities, digital scholarship, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies, with attention to implications for research support and library practice.

Campus and Community Collaborations: This section will highlight partnerships between academic libraries, campus units, and community organizations, with an emphasis on public humanities, health humanities, civic engagement, and knowledge co-creation. For case studies, contributors should include specific evaluation metrics and assessment tools to quantify institutional impact. Explicit details on ethical standards and compliance, including IRB approval and consent protocols, are strongly encouraged.

The conference will be partly hybrid, and accepted authors will be asked to identify their preference for in-person or online attendance.

From the call:

Conference Theme: “Creativity”

Creativity has always been part of digital humanities. It is present in the works and practices we study as well as in the ways we build collections, design tools, model data, make comparisons, create editions, develop visualisations and interpret cultural materials. Digital humanities research often depends on finding new ways to work with materials that do not fit easily into existing categories or methods.

For DH2027, we invite the community to think about creativity in this broad sense. What does creativity mean when humanistic work is increasingly carried out with computational methods, digital media and artificial intelligence? How are new forms of cultural expression changing what we study and how we study it? And where does creativity lie in research practices that may appear, at first sight, to be mainly technical or analytical? Creativity also takes place under constraint. Languages, cultural traditions, datasets, standards, platforms, infrastructures, copyright, access, labour, institutional settings and environmental costs all influence what can be made, studied, represented and shared. Such constraints can limit creative possibilities, but they can also lead to new methods and different ways of seeing cultural materials.

Proposals are particularly invited that engage with one of the following areas:

Computational creativity

Creative methods and interpretation

Creative engagements with cultural heritage

Digital arts

Creative technologies

Proposals may be submitted for long papers, short papers, posters, and pre-conference workshops. Details on session formats and special conference tracks are available in the CFP.

Deadline for submissions: November 20, 2026. Proposals must be submitted via ConfTool: https://www.conftool.pro/dh2027/.

Proposals on all topics relevant to cultural studies will be considered, with priority given to those that engage the conference’s theme of Thresholds.

From the call for proposals:

In more ways than one, we exist at the threshold: the resurgence of fascist governance; the potential elimination of Black studies, Ethnic studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality studies from the University; the tipping point of runaway climate change; mounting violations of privacy via AI and other technology. Yet, scholars push back against presentist conceptions of the threshold. Black, Indigenous, and Queer scholars, for example, have illustrated how their communities have long been impacted by colonial and environmental catastrophe. Our political rhetoric, our economic forecast, our climatological outlook, and our popular imagination calls attention incessantly to our “momentous moment”–perpetually on the brink, at the edge, at an inflection point. This rhetoric of impending catastrophe and permacrisis often serves to maintain the status quo, or obfuscate the actual sites of suffering and loci of power that perpetuate that physical, political, economic and environmental violence. Thus, scholars raise the question, who and what histories are left out by certain framings of the threshold? At the same time, this threshold does not only gesture to an impending doom, but possibilities for imagining otherwise: How might we detour away from the destinies prescribed by Western colonial regimes? How might we re-conceptualize our understanding of difference? The liminality of thresholds calls attention to the increasingly blurry boundaries between assumed oppositions: the human and the technological, the natural and the artificial, along with myriad taxonomies and categories of race, gender, sex, sexuality, ability, and identity. What new possibilities for subversive agency exist among those unruly bodies which exceed the limited categories placed upon them?

Submissions should be made by November 20, 2026, through the EasyChair link on the CFP webpage.

The theme, “Where Is Digital Humanities?”, asks where DH does its work after LLMs: with whom, on what terms, and at what cost. The call is organized around three axes: DH’s disciplinary identity, its credibility with publics such as citizen scientists and heritage volunteers, and its place in a research lifecycle shaped by generative AI, including that AI’s environmental costs. Several suggested topics speak directly to library and archives work. These include cultural heritage institutions as research partners, digital archives and long-term preservation, reproducibility and citation when models are versioned or deprecated, and crowdsourcing and participatory annotation. The conference accepts proposals in English for oral presentations, lightning talks, posters, demos, panels, and workshops. All submissions are anonymized and go through double-blind review. Presentations must be in person, since no online option is planned. Proposals are due December 7, 2026. Full details are in the call for papers.

From the call:

This symposium aims to provide a forum for scholars, archivists, community and cultural organizations interested in critical approaches to digital archives containing materials from and about the SWANA (Southwest Asia and North Africa) region, understood as a geographic, historical, and cultural space. In this space, archives have been historically imposed, looted, extracted, dispersed, destroyed, but also rescued, rebuilt and reinvented, pioneering practices of resistance, reparation and return that raise compelling ethical, theoretical and practical questions for scholars and stakeholders (Ghaddar, 2025). Building on Itza Carbajal and Michelle Caswell’s framework (2021), our approach seeks to advance a language-sensitive understanding of reparative archival practices that are attentive to and accountable for the technological, social, and environmental impacts of digital archives. We are interested in digitisation as a transformative process that reshapes archival practices, knowledge production, and power relations. Conceived as a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and horizontal forum, the symposium invites participants, both in person and online, to engage in discussion and exchange around three interconnected themes and interpretative lenses. Two keynote speakers – Sara Salem (LSE) and Amanda Egbe (UWE) – will act as discussants, facilitating collective reflection and dialogue around participants’ contributions. The three themes of the symposium are Travel,: Archives in Movement; Translation: Languages in the Archives; and Transformation: Digital Futures and Ethics of Dematerialization.

As the call explains,

The LIDA 2027 conference explores questions prompted by the major transformations of memory institutions in the age of artificial intelligence with two inter-related themes: “Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Institutional Response” and “Emotion and Creativity.” In the age of artificial intelligence, technological, philosophical, and humanistic values are becoming intertwined. This presents new opportunities and challenges for memory institutions while encouraging a deeper understanding of the role of emotion and creativity in designing spaces for reflection on, and even counter-response to, artificial intelligence.
