The Institute invites proposals from digital scholarship teams, as in previous years, and new to this year, proposals from individuals as part of the “Digital Scholarship Incubator, CTRL-ALT-Retreat.” From the call:

The steering committee encourages proposals from teams and individuals in whole or in part new to digital scholarship. We employ an expansive definition of “digital project” that can include topics like infrastructure development and pedagogical practice. Projects of all types, and in any stage, are welcomed. We invite projects led by staff and early career faculty, as well as projects with substantial undergraduate leadership. We especially encourage proposals that include those who are Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and people of color, people with disabilities, neurodivergent people, and LGBTQ+ people.

Registration costs are $750 per person for faculty/staff, and $250 per person for students. ILiADS housing and food costs are $250 for the week.

Proposal guidelines share a list of headings to include and give examples of successful proposals, which will be accepted until April 3rd. Successful proposals will be notified of their acceptance by May 1st.

Digital Pedagogy and Emerging Technologies: Higher education institutions are navigating the intersection of pedagogy and emerging technologies. How are these innovative technologies reshaping teaching and learning experiences? What are the associated affordances, concerns, and implications?

Critical Digital Pedagogy and the Post-Truth society: It is becoming increasingly difficult to tell what is real and what is true. How can Digital Pedagogy help instructors and students to navigate issues related to digital literacy, data ethics, social media influences, etc.? How do we question and challenge dominant beliefs and practices in the field of Digital Pedagogy?

Digital (de)colonialism: How have digital pedagogy techniques and tools helped instructors and students address anti-racist and decolonization practices in their curriculum and research? What are the challenges and opportunities? Do you have any best practices to share?

Inclusivity, Accessibility, and Digital Pedagogy: Issues related to inclusivity and accessibility are at the forefront of Digital Pedagogy. What barriers have you encountered in your research and practice? How have you resolved them? What barriers remain? This is an opportunity to reflect on and share frameworks and best practices that have helped to reduce pedagogical barriers and integrate digital pedagogy approaches.

Sustainability, Renewability, and Environmental Costs in the digital sphere: Digital pedagogy is not immune to environmental critique. There are environmental impacts associated with generating the power and equipment needed to support digital initiatives. How should we reconcile the benefits of digital pedagogy with its environmental costs? Can digital pedagogy proponents be good environmental stewards?

The call for submissions opens on March 2nd, and closes April 13th. Presentations will be 20 minutes, synchronous, and may discuss ongoing research, case studies, reflections, or projects, among other things. Presenters will be notified of their acceptance on June 15th, and will submit their presentation slides by July 31st.

This blog post is recommended for those interested in binary or minimalist code, material culture, history of machines, or hints of data feminism.

From the post:

The knitting machines I own share their punch card dimensions (24 stitches wide) with one of the first punch cards (the Hollerith card, used for the 1890 census, was a 24-column punch card). They’re an important piece of computing history—and crucially, one of the few that isn’t only history because a broad community of people, on- and off-line, are still sharing knowledge on how to hack, restore, and use them.

All punch cards are fundamentally digital, even if we don’t generally think of “digital” as a property physical objects can have. It is only recently that our associations of computing with “the cloud” and other ephemeral metaphors have superseded the fundamentally physical processes that support computation. Working with knitting machine punch cards reminds me that the cloud is a metaphor, and lets me own and manipulate my code in a way I find both challenging and creatively liberating.
