Doug Boyd (Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History, University of Kentucky) has written a post offering a “sneak peak” of Exactly, a tool under development by the Nunn Center in partnership with AV Preserve, intended to bring digital preservation concepts of fixity directly to researchers working in oral history. Boyd notes:
By the time a digital archive begins tracking fixity for a born-digital file created outside of the archive, the file has been moved multiple times, renamed, synchronized with a personal Dropbox account, and copied and pasted to an external hard drive to bring in to the archive.
Yet, as Boyd explains, “the tools and workflows to track fixity are designed for deployment in professional archival environments.” Exactly aims to solve this by allowing researchers to ensure file fixity using the Bag-It standard while taking advantage of file-sharing systems found in the user’s existing workflow.
